Almost everyone will go through a move during their lives. Whether you find yourself in a car full of boxes with a helping friend or family member with you, or even being by yourself, the feeling of something new is exciting. But for some, it’s characterized as stressful.
But no need to worry. We are here to give you all the secrets to make your move enjoyable and stress free.
Because all new beginnings deserve to be celebrated and enjoyed.
And we can’t forget about our lovely animals and how to treat them with love, so they are relaxed and ready to settle in their new space.
Here is a list with our top 7 tips for moving house.
1. PACK IN ADVANCE
Ideally, if you know about your move in advance, you can start packing and organising early. This will help you be more stress free when the time to move arrives.
You can start packing your off-season clothing items. If it’s summer, you can pack all your winter clothes and when the time to move gets closer, you will have less items to pack.
2. COUNT & LABEL
To make sure you know what goes where, you have to remember to label each box you are packing. You can write numbers with a black marker on each of your boxes and create a list on your phone with the number of the box and what items each box contains. By listing everything in your phone and having big bold numbers on each box, you can spot them while the movers are unloading the truck and constantly check the list on your phone to make sure everything is there. By using this method, you can also quickly direct them in which room you would like them to place each box.
You can of course go the old-fashioned route and write all labels on the box (ex. 1-Books, 2-Kitchen etc) for a simpler approach. But make sure to keep track of how many boxes there are on each of the boxes by writing the number of the current box first and the number of the total of the boxes next to it (ex. 1/24). This way you can count all your boxes and make sure nothing is lost on the move.
Don’t forget to write on many sides, not just one. This will help you later for spotting the labels faster, instead of looking at each side to find your labels.
3. SIDE UP
If you are using a black marker to label the boxes, you can use a red marker to place an arrow to indicate which side the box should be facing up. This will help you and whoever is helping you with the move, know not to flip the box upside down, therefore avoiding broken items in your boxes.
4. BOOK EARLY
Have you decided you want to hire help for your moving, packing or any professionals such as painters or cleaners to work on the house? Booking a service early, will help you be organised and give you peace of mind. This will also guarantee services and a good price. If you are moving at peak season, movers are either all booked, or charge higher because of high demand.
5. UTILITIES SCHEDULING
Make sure all the utilities are set up before you make your move. Electricity, water, heat or internet are essential for making your new home useful. If you arrange this ahead of time, you can keep all your records in a folder so you can have it with you if needed. Canceling the utilities in your current space is also something to remember.
6. SUPPLIES
Start by checking that you have everything you need to start packing. Boxes, tape, markers (red and black), wraps, pads, etc. Go through your items and make a list of the supplies you need. You can do this as soon as possible and as you start packing, you will be able to see what supplies you use up and be able to buy more in time to be ready for your move. You can see all the supplies we provide in our shop and check what you need from there.
7. YOUR ESSENTIALS
When the moving date comes closer, make sure that you keep a change of clothes, a toothbrush, medications, paperwork and all the items that are important to you, your family and your pets, into a suitcase or bag you’ll keep with you. You will know that if anything goes wrong, at least you’ll have some essentials with you until you sort everything out.
